End of Year 1st Grade Writing Rubric

By the end of First Grade, to get the noted score, a student:

0 - made no or minimal attempt to complete assignment.

1 - made an attempt to complete the assignment but there is difficulty with spacing, punctuation, capitalization, content, inventive spelling (does not include beginning and ending sounds) and handwriting.

   – has difficulty organizing thoughts.

2 - in response to most writing prompts, writing  2+ sentences.

   – sometimes use correct sentence structure (capitals and punctuation)

   – includes proper spacing between words and sentences.

   – does not stay on topic

   – sometimes spells high frequency words correctly with minor editing.

   – attempts to demonstrate letter/sound associations for most sounds in words. (has beginning and ending sounds of words and some middle vowel sounds)

3 - in response to most writing prompts, writing 4+ sentences.

   – stays on topic given by the teacher.

   – uses correct sentence structure. (capitals, punctuation, and spacing)

   – usually spells high frequency words and word wall words correctly with minor editing.

   – attempts to use a variety of sentence structures and transition words. (first, next, then, after that, finally, etc.)

4 - all of “3″ plus

   – uses varied word choices within sentences.  (no repetitive words)

   – utilizes more complex sentence structure and a variety of sentence structures. (longer sentences with       more detail)

   – responds to a task with a beginning, middle and end. (stories are written in cohesive, logical order)

    - uses transition words to make the story flow.
